- The Nkx3.1 gene encodes an androgen regulated prostate-specific homeobox-containing transcription factor. This transcription factor functions as a negative regulator of epithelial cell growth in prostate tissue. In mice the homologue Nkx3.1 is exclusively expressed in prostate epithelium. In Humans; Nkx3.1 expression is also restricted to the prostate.
Many data show that Nkx3.1 expression is highly; but not exclusively; specific for the prostate. Aberrant expression of this gene is associated with prostate tumor progression. - Gene Details:
