Aptamers are synthetic nucleic acid-based affinity ligands that are isolated based on their ability to bind specifically and with high affinity to a given target. They can be developed with high affinity and highly specific in a short time frame ( ~8 weeks) and are a very real alternative to antibodies, especially for novel targets.
