A Beekeepers Journey - 'You Will Get Stung!' - Part 4
In April I was asked to do a short presentation to the Parish Council on how the grant they provided has benefited the Kings Sutton Community Beekeepers and the community. This was a great success, and many people asked questions ranging from giving speeches at other village group sessions to what I do if I see a swarm of bees! We have really come a long way in such a short time:
3 of the KSCB group have been attending various Oxfordshire Beekeeping training sessions, both practical and theoretical, to enable us to understand how these amazing super organisms work as a collective group. These courses run to the end of July. We have learned:
- Introduction, Theory & Equipment
- Swarms and beekeeping and the public
- Colony health, hygiene, pest & disease
- 4 practical sessions at the OBKA apiary
We still have to following to go:
- Honey Crop & Wintering
- 2 Practical sessions at the OBKA apiary
As our hives have been very active during this very nice weather we have had over April and May, we completed our first honey crop (prior to any training!) on the 25th of May. This is fantastic work by our colony and has produced around 25 lbs. of honey!
We plan to sell our honey as we are a not-for-profit group and re-invest everything back into our community group
We are now welcoming new members to join our beekeeping group and will provide practical hands-on training.
The group has been sponsored by 2BScientific Limited - which helps us keep the hives up and running and productive. A massive thank you to them!
