- Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS, Fetal Calf Serum) acts not only as a growth promoting additive to your cell culture media, but also as a stabilizer in diagnostic assays, for surface coating culture vessels or for inactivating trypsin. It supports most cell lines and is tested for viruses and microorganisms. Collection facilities inside the United States have been declared free of certain bovine viruses such as foot and mouth disease by the USDA. Each lot of animal serum is certified as to country of origin (US). Documentation of traceability can be supplied upon request for every lot of fetal bovine serum. Fetal bovine serum is collected using a closed, aseptic cardiocentesis method in order to minimize hemoglobin, endotoxin, and microbial agents.
