- Prions are large cell membrane-anchored glycoproteins that are normally localized to the presynaptic membrane of neurons in mammalian brain. Prions are likely to be involved in synaptic transmission. In prion diseases, such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker syndrome (GSS), Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI), Alpers Syndrome, and Kuru, the normal cellular form of this protein (PrPc) is transformed into an altered, proteolysis-resistant form upon coming into contact with an infectious prion protein (PrPsc) from another host. This altered prion protein accumulates in cytoplasmic vesicles of diseased individuals, forming lesions, vacuoles, and amyloid deposits. This antiserum can routinely be used without further purification. Applications: Suitable for use in Flow Cytometry, Immunoprecipitation, ELISA, Western Blot and Immunohistochemistry. Other applications not tested. Recommended Dilutions: Flow Cytometry: ≤1ug/10e6 cells in 100ul Optimal dilutions to be determined by the researcher. Storage and Stability: May be stored at 4°C for short-term only. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20°C. Aliquots are stable for 12 months after receipt. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap.
