- Human Immunoglobulin A1 (Human IgA1) is an orally effective IgA subclass that predominates in human blood and the upper respiratory tract. In the presence of complement and phagocytes; Human Immunoglobulin A1 kills Streptococcus pneumoniae in vitro; but this activity depends on an intact hinge region and is susceptible to cleavage by bacterial IgA1 proteases; resulting in loss of effector functions. Human Immunoglobulin A1 is central to research on IgA nephropathy; and its abnormally glycosylated form is more prone to form immune complexes with antibodies. Human Immunoglobulin A1 enters the circulation via reverse transcytosis and deposits in the glomerular mesangial region; thereby activating complement and exacerbating the nephropathy phenotype. Human Immunoglobulin A1 can be used in studies related to Streptococcus pneumoniae infection and the pathogenesis of IgA nephropathy[1][2][3].
