As a fluorescent dye; nitrophenyl β-D-Cellotrioside can be hydrolyzed by enzymes to release 4-nitrophenol; producing a yellow color. The activity of the enzyme can be quantitatively analyzed by monitoring the change in absorbance at 405 nm[1].
