- Ivermectin is a broad spectrum antihelmintic, used clinically to treat many types of parasitic infestations including head lice, scabies and river blindness. Ivermectin acts through binding to glutamate-gated chloride channels (GluCls) in the membranes of invertebrate nerve and muscle cells, causing increased permeability to chloride ions resulting in cellular hyper-polarization followed by paralysis and death. Ivermectin additionally displays antiviral activity against HIV-1 and other viruses and inhibits replication of SARS-CoV-2 in vitro with an IC50 of 2μM.
