Z-DEVD-FMK is a cell-permeable, irreversible inhibitor of caspase-3 with an IC50 of 0.13 uM and no activity at cathepsin B and cathepsin L. Z-DEVD-FMK inhibits apoptotic cell death in many cell types including cancer cells, it is neuroprotective in rat hippocampus following seizures in vivo and local application of Z-DEVD-FMK after spinal cord injury in rats reduces secondary tissue injury and helps preserve motor function.
