- Crystal violet (also known as methyl violet) has the molecular formula C25H30N3Cl·9H2O; a molecular weight of 407.98; and CAS number 548-62-9. It is a basic dye; soluble in water and ethanol; and stains tissues and nuclei purple. Crystal violet is widely used in cytology; histology; bacteriology and other fields; and is an excellent staining agent. Crystal Violet Staining Solution is mainly composed of crystal violet and deionized water. It can be used for clonogenic assays; cell migration assays and other experiments.
