This gene encodes an enzyme that catalyzes the first step in the biosynthesis of cysteinyl leukotrienes; potent biological compounds derived from arachidonic acid. Leukotrienes have been implicated as mediators of anaphylaxis and inflammatory conditions such as human bronchial asthma.
