- SAA is A family of proteins encoded by multiple genes, most of which are synthesized by the liver. SAAl and SAA2 encode acute SAA (A-SAA), SAA3 is a non-functional sequence, and SAA4 encodes a constitutive SAA (C-SAA) in humans. During the acute phase of inflammation, sAA can increase within 24 hours, maintain for 2-3 days, then decrease, and return to normal levels after 7-10 days. It has long been regarded as an acute phase protein, but existing studies suggest that SAA can act as apolipoprotein to promote cholesterol recycling under inflammatory conditions. Macrophages, lymphocytes, endothelial cells and other cells are mobilized to participate in inflammatory response and tissue repair.
