Endothelial cells are dynamic participants in cell and organ function, rather than a passive barrier. Through the expression of surface proteins and the secretion of soluble mediators, endothelial cells control vascular tone and permeability, regulate coagulation and thrombosis, and direct the recruitment and homing of white blood cells to specific areas of inflammation. This endothelial cell dependent control of white blood cell roll, adhesion, and transendothelial migration involves several known endothelial cell surface molecules, including E- and P-selectin, ICAMs, and VCAM-1, which are differentially regulated by pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF and IFNA.
