- The terminal complement complex (TCC, SC5b-9) is the result of a divergent pathway that activates the complement system by the classical, bypass or MBL pathways. The membrane attack complex (MAC), a form of TCC, is a stable complex that mediates irreversible target cell membrane damage associated with complement activation. The C5b-9 complex formed in the absence of target membranes binds to naturally occurring regulatory serum proteins, such as S proteins, to form steady state SC5b-9.The status of the terminal complement pathway in a sample is indicated by measuring the concentration of TCC. The membrane attack complex, at abnormally elevated concentrations, exhibits cytotoxicity.
