- Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a pleiotropic, A Alpha-helical cytokine with a molecular weight of 22-28 kDa. It is both phosphorylated and variably glycosylated, and it plays pivotal roles in acute phase response, inflammation, hematopoiesis, bone metabolism, and cancer progression. As a potent lymphoid cell growth factor, IL-6 promotes the proliferation and survival of specific B cells and T cells. It is also integral to host defense mechanisms, immune regulation, and hematopoiesis. IL-6 is produced by a variety of cell types, including T cells, B cells, monocytes, fibroblasts, hepatocytes, endothelial cells, and keratinocytes.
