- Sphingosine is formed through ceramidase catalyzed hydrolysis of ceramide. It is a potent inhibitor of protein kinase C (IC50 = 1-3 uM). Sphingosine is phosphorylated by sphingosine kinase to the bioactive lipid sphingosine 1-phosphate.
