Calpains are calcium-dependent cysteine proteases involved in a wide range of physiological processes. Calpain inhibitors can protect against necrotic neuronal death and, to a lesser extent, apoptotic death. Calpain inhibitors are useful tools for studying diseases, especially those involving neurodegeneration.
