- BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) is a neurotrophic factor belonging to the neurotrophin family, characterized by a conserved cysteine knot structure and sharing homology with other neurotrophins such as NGF and NT-3. It is widely expressed in the central and peripheral nervous systems, with particularly high concentrations in brain regions like the hippocampus and cerebral cortex. BDNF plays crucial roles in neural growth, survival, synaptic plasticity, and cognitive function. It inhibits apoptotic pathways and enhances neuronal survival under conditions of serum deprivation or stress. When combined with factors like retinoic acid, BDNF can induce the differentiation of neural stem cells (NSCs) or PC12 cells into neurons.
