- Herpes simplex viruses (HSV)-1 and HSV-2 cause a variety of human diseases, including encephalitis, keratitis, neonatal disease, and mucocutaneous and skin diseases such as herpes labialis, genital herpes, and herpetic whitlow. It plays an essential role in the entry of the virus into a host cell, together with other HSV-1 envelope glycoproteins, including gD and a complex of gH and gL (gH/gL).
