Composed of a phospholipid bilayer encircled by amphipathic membrane scaffold proteins (MSPs), they form a discoidal structure. This design enables stable encapsulation of membrane proteins or lipid-associated antigens, preserving their native conformation and biological activity, while also providing good water solubility and monodispersity.
