Syndecan-1 is a cell membrane protein that, after its shedding by heparanase enzymes, is accumulated in the extracellular matrix of some tumors, e.g. myeloma and lung carcinoma, where it modulates several key processes of tumorigenesis such as cancer cell proliferation and apoptosis, angiogenesis and metastasis.
