- Gangliosides are glycosphingolipids expressed on the cell surface membranes of most mammalian cell types. In ELISA experiments E1 showed a highly-restricted binding specificity, detecting only GM2 (not GM1 or GM3). The antibody recognises only the N-acetylneuraminic acid deratives of gangliosides; no N-glycolylneuraminic acid derivatives were recognised.
