The specific in vivo functions of syncoilin has not yet been determined; but it has been shown to be up-regulated at the sarcolemma in individuals with various forms of neuromuscular disease. Syncoilin is predicted to facilitate lateral force transmission during skeletal muscle contraction; while it does not form homofilaments nor heterofilaments with other IF proteins.
