- Extra Details:
- Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is present in fetal plasma; and it binds e.g. copper; nickel; and bilirubin. Measuring of alpha-fetoprotein level in amniotic fluid can reveal severe fetal defects. In adults; elevated AFP concentrations in the plasma can indicate hepatocellular carcinoma or teratoblastoma. In some individuals; hereditary persistance of alpha-fetoprotein can be observed without any obvious pathology. Specificity: The mouse monoclonal antibody AFP-01 reacts with human alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP); a 70 kDa oncofetal antigen. AFP is a major fetal plasma protein; but is not present in healthy adult tissues. Elevated AFP concentrations in adult plasma may be an early marker of hepatocellular carcinoma or teratoblastoma; while high concentrations in amniotic fluid may indicate severe congenital defects of a fetus.
