- Specificity: Anti-HSV (Clone HSV-0846) has known reactivity for glycoprotein D (gD) of HSV 1 & 2. Antigen: Glycoprotein D; gD Background: Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and type 2 (HSV-2) are two closely related enveloped DNA viruses that are members of the Herpesviridae family of viruses. HSV is a neurotropic virus that initially infects and replicates in epithelial cells of the mucosal epithelium before it establishes lifelong latent infection within sensory neurons. While both viruses can cause genital infection; HSV-2 is most often the cause of these infections. HSV-1 is typically spread during childhood and has a global prevalence of about 90%. Both viruses can be spread to other tissues via contact with infected skin or mucous membranes. Glycoprotein D (gD) is the major receptor binding protein of HSV and binds to at least one of the three known entry receptors: herpesvirus entry mediator (HVEM); nectin-1; and 3-O sulfated heparan sulfate.
