- Specificity: Anti-CMV (Clone CMV-3097) is specific for pp65 of cytomegalovirus and functions in the pp65 antigenemia assay. Antigen: pp65 Background: Human Cytomegalovirus (CMV); also known as Human betaherpesvirus 5; is a large; double-stranded DNA virus that belongs to the Herpesviridae family. CMV infections generally present as asymptomatic or mild flu-like symptoms in healthy individuals but can be life-threatening for those with weakened immune systems. CMV infections are highly prevalent worldwide; with up to 90% of adults in some populations testing positive for the virus. It can be transmitted through bodily fluids such as blood; semen; vaginal secretions; and breast milk; as well as organ transplantation and blood transfusion. Like other herpesviruses; CMV has the ability to establish lifelong latency in infected individuals; meaning the virus can remain dormant in the body for years and reactivate under certain circumstances.
