- Specificity: Anti-Giardia lamblia (Clone GIAR-4849) is specific for the 65 kDa Giardia antigen of the cyst form of the parasite. Background: Giardia; one of the most common waterborne pathogens worldwide; is a microscopic protozoan parasite that causes giardiasis; a gastrointestinal illness in humans and animals. The parasite exists in two forms: a motile; infective form called a cyst; and a non-motile; replicative form called a trophozoite. Transmission occurs through the ingestion of cysts; which can be found in contaminated water; food; or by direct contact with infected individuals or animals. Once ingested; the cysts transform into trophozoites in the small intestine; where they attach to the intestinal lining and can cause diarrhea; abdominal cramps; bloating; and nausea. Giardiasis is especially concerning in settings with poor sanitation and water quality; and it can lead to malabsorption and chronic infection in some cases. Proper hygiene; water treatment; and personal preventive measures are essential to reduce the transmission of Giardia and the impact of giardiasis on public health.
