- Corticosterone is an endogenous steroid hormone produced in the adrenal cortex and can also be called 17-Deoxycortisol, 11B Beta,21-Dihydroxyprogesterone or Kendall's compound B. Corticosterone binds to glucocorticoid and salocorticoid receptors and is the precursor of aldosterone synthesis. Since increased production of glucocorticoids is often associated with stress, corticosterone is commonly used as a biomarker of stress. At the same time, plasma corticosterone levels have circadian variations and may play an important role in regulating sleep-wake cycles.
