- Non ionic detergents like NP40 are used in immunoassays for diluting antibodies to lower background, and non-specific antigen-antibody (ag-ab) reaction. This detergent is also used in washing buffer from 0.1- 0.5% in all immunoassays (ELISA, Immunohistochemistry (IHC), Blot assays and others) to reduce background. Tergitol-type NP-40, which is nonyl phenoxylpolyethoxylethanol, lower surface tension of water.
