Extra Details:: OR1J4 encodes an olfactory receptor belonging to the G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily. Like other olfactory receptors; OR1J4 is located in the olfactory epithelium; where it interacts with odorant molecules to initiate a neuronal response leading to the perception of smell. It couples to G olf proteins; activating adenylyl cyclase and increasing cAMP; which triggers depolarization of olfactory sensory neurons. OR1J4 is part of a large gene family characterized by single-exon genes and 7-transmembrane domain structures. Beyond olfaction; some olfactory receptors (including OR1J4) are expressed in non-olfactory tissues; suggesting potential roles in cell signaling; migration; and metabolism.
