- Haemophilus influenzae is a small (1x3um), pleomorphic, gram-negative coccobacillus. It is a nonmotile, non-spore-forming, fastidious, facultative anaerobe. Some strains of H. influenzae possess a polysaccharide capsule. All strains are serotyped into 6 different types (a-f) based on their biochemically different capsules. The most virulent strain is H. influenzae type b (Hib), with its polyribosyl ribitol phosphate (PRP) capsule. It accounts for more than 95% of H. influenzae invasive diseases, including bacteremia, meningitis, cellulitis, epiglottitis, septic arthritis, pneumonia, and empyema. Less common invasive Hib infections include endophthalmitis, urinary tract infection, abscesses, cervical adenitis, glossitis, osteomyelitis, and endocarditis. The nonencapsulated or nontypeable H. influenzae strains cause mucosal infections, including otitis media, conjunctivitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Less commonly, these strains cause invasive disease. Applications: Suitable for use in ELISA and Immunofluorescence. Other applications have not been tested. Recommended Dilutions: Optimal dilutions to be determined by the researcher. Storage and Stability: May be stored at 4°C for short-term only. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20°C. Aliquots are stable for 12 months after receipt. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap.
