- CD56 is a 175–185kD isoform of the neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM), expressed by lymphocytes mediating non-MHC restricted cytotoxicity and is present on some neural tissues and tumors. NCAM is involved in intercellular adhesion and plays a role in outgrowth of neurites and the development of the nervous system. Two major epitopes have been defined. At the international Workshop on SCLC antibodies, categorized as cluster 1 antibody. All cells in small cell carcinomas and carcinoids of the lung are strongly positive. NCAM (CD56) is a marker for natural killer: Can be used to distinguish NK cells from other hematopoietic cell populations. Applications: Suitable for use in Immunohistochemistry and Western Blot. Other applications not tested. Recommended Dilution: Immunohistochemistry (Frozen sections): 1:10-1:20. Using the ABC Immunohistochemistry method. Western Blot: Reactive with three main clusters of protein bands in respectively the 200kD, 100kD and 25-27kD region. Optimal dilution determined by the researcher. Positive Control: Pancreatic islet cells. Storage and Stability: May be stored at 4°C for short-term only. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20°C. Aliquots are stable for 12 months after receipt. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap.
