- Azidothymidine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor that, following triphosphorylation by thymidine kinase, potently blocks replication of HIV (EC₅₀ = 3nM) with low cytotoxicity (CC₅₀ >5uM). Displays 100-fold selectivity for HIV reverse transcriptase over DNA polymerase α. Suppresses HIV-1 replication and enhances cell viability in HIV-1 infected T cells. Antiretroviral agent. Also decreases CRISPR-mediated homology directed repair (HDR) efficiency. Synonyms: AZT; Zidovudine; Retrovis; Timazid; Retrovir; NSC 602670 CAS No: 30516-87-1 Molecular Formula: C10H13N5O4 Molecular Weight: 267.24 Purity (HPLC): ≥97% Appearance: White to off-white crystalline solid. Melting Point: 118-120°C Solubility: Water (Slightly soluble), alcohol (soluble) Water Content (Karl Fischer): ≤1% Method for Determining Identity: Proton NMR Spectroscopic Residue on Ignition: ≤0.25% Optical Rotation (C=10mg/ml in Alcohol): [a]20D=60.5-63.0° Storage and Stability: May be stored at RT for short-term only. Long-term storage is recommended at -20°C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial prior to removing the cap.
