- 2-Methylcitric Acid is a metabolite of Citric Acid. It is formed from the condensation of propionoyl-CoA and oxaloacetic acid catalyzed by a citrate synthase enzyme. 2-Methylcitric acid is an endogenous tricarboxylic acid formed by the condensation of propionyl-CoA with oxaloacetic acid by citrate synthase under conditions of propionyl-CoA accumulation. Accumulation of 2-methylcitric acid is associated with cobalamin deficiencies, propionic acidemia, and methylmalonic acidurias. Synonyms: 2-Hydroxy-1,2,3-butanetricarboxylic Acid CAS Number: 6061-96-7 Molecular Formula: C₇H₁₀O₇ Molecular Weight: 206.15 Purity: ≥97% Appearance: White to off-white solid Melting Point: 138-140ºC (lit) Solubility: DMSO (Slightly), Methanol (Slightly) Method for Determining Identity: Proton NMR (DMSO-d6) Spectroscopic and Mass Spectrometric Analysis TLC Conditions: SiO2; Dichloromethane: Methanol: Acetic Acid = 9:1:0.1; Visualized with AMCS and KMnO4; Single Spot, Rf = 0.65 Storage and Stability: May be stored at RT for short-term only.
