- AFP, also known as alpha-fetoprotein, is a major plasma protein produced by the yolk sac and the liver during fetal development. It is thought to be the fetal form of serum albumin. This protein binds to copper, nickel, fatty acids and bilirubin. The main function of this is to prevent the virilization of female fetuses. As it does not bind estrogen, its function in humans is less clear. Applications: Suitable for use in ELISA, Western Blot, Immunocytochemistry/Immunofluorescence, Flow Cytometry. Other applications not tested. Recommended Dilution: Optimal dilutions to be determined by the researcher. Hybridoma: F0 myeloma cells with spleen cells from BALB/c mice. Storage and Stability: May be stored at 4°C for short-term only. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20°C. Aliquots are stable for 12 months after receipt. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap.
