- Ferrochelatase (FECH, protoheme ferrolyase) is an enzyme that catalyses the terminal (eighth) step in the biosynthesis of heme, converting protoporphyrin IX into heme. It catalyses reaction: protoporphyrin + Fe++ <=> protoheme + 2 H+. A ferrochelatase enzyme consists of 497aa residues with a m.w. of 55.4kD. Ferrochelatase is localized to the mitochondrion where it catalyzes the insertion of the ferrous form of iron into protoporphyrin IX in the heme synthesis pathway. Defects in ferrochelatase are associated with erythropoietic protoporphyria. Two transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been found for this gene. Applications: Suitable for use in Western Blot and Immunohistochemistry. Other applications not tested. Recommended Dilution: Optimal dilutions to be determined by the researcher. Storage and Stability: May be stored at 4°C for short-term only. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20°C. Aliquots are stable for 12 months after receipt. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap.
