- IotaCarrageenin is a polysaccharide obtained from red algae. ι-Carrageenin has been used as a bioadhesive polymer to enhance the permeation effect of AT1002 on the nasal absortion of insulin. Iota-Carageenan is a gelling sulfated galactan extracted from red seaweed (typically Euchuma cottonii and Euchuma spinosum). The structure of all carrageenans consists of a strictly alternating masked repeating unit of (1,3) linked α-D-galactose and (1,4) linked β-D-galactose. The α-linked galactose occurs as a 3,6-anhydro-2-sulphate unit and the β-linked sugar occurs as the 4-sulfate. Synonyms: I-Carrageenan; Vegetable gelatin CAS No: 9062-07-1 Molecular Formula: [C14H22O15S22-]x Molecular Weight: -494.45 Appearance: White to gray to brown powder to crystal Purity: As reported Loss on Drying: ≤12% Viscosity: 5-20m Pa-s (0.3%, H2O, 25°C) Ash: ≤40% Storage and Stability: May be stored at RT for short-term only. Long-term storage is recommended at 4°C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial prior to removing the cap.
