Sodium polyanetholesulfonate was originally developed as an anticoagulant, however it also possesses anticomplement properties and lowers the bactericidal action of blood. Polyanetholesulfonic acid sodium salt is therefore useful as a diagnostic reagent to encourage the growth of pathogens within blood.
