- DL-4-Hydroxy-2-ketoglutarate dilithium salt (DL4KG) is a lysine analogue that is used as a substrate for the enzyme aldolase. DL4KG has a hydroxyl group, which can react with the amino group of lysine residues on proteins to produce an unstable intermediate. This process eventually leads to the production of glutamate and glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate, which are needed in the synthesis of ATP. DL4KG has been shown to be an inhibitor of bacterial enzymes such as glutamate dehydrogenase, which catalyzes the conversion of L-glutamic acid to L-glutamine. Inhibition by DL4KG has been demonstrated in vitro at concentrations between 2-10mM.
