2-Hydroxy-3-methylbutyric Acid is a α-hydroxylated butyric acid derivative used as a marker in chemical diagnosis of organic aciduria and other inborn errors. 2-Hydroxy-3-methylbutyric Acid is also used as a metabolomic biomarkers in preeclampsia. 2-Hydroxy-3-methylbutyric acid is an intermediate in the microbial metabolism of hydrogen fluoride and caproic acid. It can be used as a diagnostic for probiotic bacteria. 2-Hydroxy-3-methylbutyric acid has been shown to cause cell lysis, which may be due to its ability to act as a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) enhancer. The activity index of 2-hydroxy-3-methylbutyric acid is higher than that of other organic acids, such as 3,4-dimethoxybenzoic acid and ferulic acid. Synonyms: (±)-2-Hydroxy-3-methylbutyric Acid; (±)-2-Hydroxyisopentanoic Acid; (±)-2-Hydroxyisovaleric Acid; (±)-α-Hydroxyisovaleric Acid; 2-Hydroxy-3-methylbutanoic Acid; 2-Hydroxyisovaleric Acid; 2-Oxyisovaleric Acid; 3-Methyl-2-hydroxybutyric Acid; DL-2-Hydroxy-3-methylbutanoic Acid; DL-2-Hydroxyisovaleric Acid; DL-α-Hydroxyisovaleric Acid; NSC 227884; dl-2-Hydroxyisovaleric Acid; α-Hydroxyisovaleric Acid CAS No: 4026-18-0 Molecular Formula: C5H10O3 Molecular Weight: 118.13 Appearance: White solid Purity: ≥97% Melting Point: 86-87°C (lit.)
