- Fluorescein is a fluorescent dye that, when attached to other molecules, can be used as a marker for biological processes. 5-(4,6-Dichloro-S-triazin-2-ylamino)fluorescein-hydrochloride is a derivative of fluorescein that is covalently linked to collagen and has been shown to inhibit protease activity in vitro and in vivo. This dye binds the basic fibroblast cells and the mouse monoclonal antibody. Fluorescein has also been shown to bind to skin cells and to produce an intracellular signal that can be detected at low concentrations with high sensitivity. The use of this fluorescent dye as a marker for collagen production has been investigated in a model system, which uses tetrazolium dye and laser ablation. Tetrazolium dye binds preferentially to fluorescein (because of its positive charge), whereas laser ablation produces an intense light.
