- White spot syndrome virus (WSSV), the only member of the genus Whispovirus in the novel Nimaviridae family, is a large enveloped virus with double-stranded DNA. WSSV is a lethal pathogen that infects shrimp and many other crustaceans, such as crayfish, crab and lobster. White spot syndrome (WSS) is a viral infection of penaeid shrimp. The disease is highly lethal and contagious, killing shrimp quickly. The white spot syndromes (WSS) are a group of diseases characterized by inflammation and dysfunction of the outer retina, retinal pigment epithelium, choroid, or a combination of these. WSSV is the most significant impediment to the economical sustainability and growth of the global crustacean aquaculture trade. It has caused the loss of billions in USD since its original outbreaks in the early 1990s. To date, WSSV outbreaks have been detected in most major shrimp producing areas including Asia, Central, South and North America, Europe and Africa. The OIE and European Food Safety Authority have listed all marine, brackish and freshwater crustaceans as possible hosts or vectors for this virus that can cause 100% mortality in penaeid shrimp within 3–10 days. There is no prophylactic treatment or cure for WSSV that has been proven useful in large aquaculture settings. Best management practices for preventing this disease remain proper sanitization, good husbandry and use of high-quality specific pathogen-free grow-out stock. Rapid and specific diagnosis of the virus can be accomplished using nested or quantitative PCR, ELISA, or Immunohistochemistry Applications: Suitable for use in ELISA, Immunohistochemistry and Western Blot. Other applications not tested. Recommended Dilutions: Western Blot: 0.5-5ug/ml Immunohistochemistry: 1-10ug/ml Optimal dilutions to be determined by the researcher. Storage and Stability: Lyophilized and reconstituted products are stable for 12 months after receipt at -20°C. Reconstitute with sterile PBS. Aliquot to avoid repeated freezing and thawing. Store at -20°C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer.
