- Extra Details:
- Alpha 2 HS glycoprotein (AHSG), also known as fetuin-A, is a heterodimeric plasma glycoprotein found in human serum at approximately 60 mg per 100 ml. AHSG is predominantly synthesized in the liver, with limited production in adipocytes and monocytes. AHSG functions as a negative acute-phase reactant, decreasing during inflammatory states. AHSG exhibits multifaceted functionality, regulating calcium metabolism, osteogenesis, and insulin signaling pathways. It inhibits ectopic calcification by forming soluble complexes with calcium and phosphate, mediates inflammatory processes, and promotes wound healing. Clinically, AHSG concentrations are reduced in cancer patients, though its role varies by cancer type. AHSG levels are positively correlated with gestational diabetes and unexplained infertility, while negatively affecting neonatal skeletal development. Higher concentrations appear in peritoneal fluids of endometriosis patients. Elevated levels are also observed in both small- and large-for-gestational-age infants. AHSG shows potential as a diagnostic biomarker for endometriosis. gestational diabetes complications, and fetal growth abnormalities, offering promising applications in clinical settings.
