- Thapsigargin is a potent inhibitor of the sarco/endoplasmic reticulum Ca²⁺-ATPase (SERCA), leading to depletion of ER calcium stores and induction of ER stress. In neuroscience, Thapsigargin is used to model ER stress-related neuronal dysfunction, a key feature in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. ER stress triggers the unfolded protein response (UPR), which can lead to apoptosis if unresolved.
