- CNGA1 and 3 belong to the cyclic nucleotide-gated channel family (CNG). They produce the primary electrical signal in photoreceptors upon absorption of a photon. These channels also generate the electrical signal in olfactory receptors, and are expressed in several other sensory and nonsensory tissues. They are voltage dependent, nonselective cation channels that are activated by direct binding of cyclic nucleotides.
