- Zearalenone is a phenolic resorcyclic acid lactone and can be produced by a number of species of Fusarium known to colonize cereals. Zearalenone (6-[10-hydroxy-6-oxo-trans-1-undecenyl]-b-resorcyclic acid lactone), also known as F-2 toxin, is an estrogenic mycotoxin that is produced by Fusarium graminearum. This fungus can infect cereal grains and can elaborate large quantities of zearalenone. Zearalenone is a naturally occurring estrogen, recognized as causing hormonal effects in animal species such as the pig. The association between zearalenone exposure and human diseases remains speculative at present; it has been considered as a possible causative agent in outbreaks of precocious pubertal changes in young children and has been suggested to have a possible involvement in human cervical cancer. Zearalenone and its derivates have been used as veterinary anabolic or estrogen substitutes. Appearance: White to off-white solid Purity: ~98% by TLC, HPLC Melting Point: 167°C Solubility: Limited solubility in water (~0.002g/100ml). Slightly soluble in hexane and progressively more in benzene, acetonitrile, dichloromethane, methanol, acetone. Produceds a clear, colorless solution at 5mg/ml in methanol. Lambda max (MeOH): 235, 274, 313 nm Storage and Stability: Lyophilized powder may be stored at -20°C. Stale for 12 months. Reconstitute with methanol. Aliquot and store at -20°C. Reconstituted product is stable for 6 months at -20°C. For maximum recovery of product, centrifuge the original vial after thawing and prior to removing the cap. Further dilutions can be made in assay buffer.
