It belongs to the functionally defined scavenger receptor (SR) superfamily. This protein is the first member of the class E scavenger receptor subfamily. Also, this protein may play a role in the progression of vulnerable carotid plaque and might regulate vulnerable plaque formation in cooperation with MMPs and TIMP2.
