It binds to the membrane of bacteria, which disrupts the cell's energy metabolism and leads to cell death. Peplomycin sulfate has been shown to be effective against a number of infectious diseases, including acute toxicities. The compound is also an antioxidant, capable of scavenging free radicals, and may have anti-cancer properties. Peplomycin sulfate is not active against Gram-positive bacteria due to the absence of lipopolysaccharide in their cell membranes.
