ACAT1 is an acetyl-CoA C-acetyltransferase enzyme. This enzyme catalyzes the reversible formation of acetoacetyl-CoA from two molecules of acetyl-CoA. It plays a role in lipoprotein assembly and dietary cholesterol absorption. In addition to its acyltransferase activity, it may act as a ligase.
