- Amyloid beta (AB Beta) aggregates are key drivers of Alzheimer's disease pathology, with soluble AB Beta42 assemblies inducing inflammation and microglial activation even at early disease stages. These aggregates disrupt neuronal homeostasis, synergize with tau pathology, and promote neuroinflammatory cascades that accelerate neurodegeneration. Emerging evidence also suggests that AB Beta may exert context-dependent protective functions, such as metal chelation, with neurotoxicity arising when these compensatory mechanisms become overwhelmed. Collectively, these findings position AB Beta aggregation as a central mechanistic and therapeutic target in neurodegenerative disease research.
